How to… work a window seat

Window seats offer a stylish spot to work, rest or play – and they’re bang on-trend. Here’s five inspiring ways to create some scene-stealing seating with extra-added benefits

1 The architectural seat  Turn a sunny spot into a sort of a built-in sofa with layers of cushions, faux furs and a sumptuous throw. Add in a log burner, as below, and hunker down in serious style even during the chilly winter months.

2. The library seat Creating built-in storage from scratch offers a marvellous opportunity to sneak a window seat within a block of shelving and storage to make yourself a ready-made seating nook cum library.

3 The storage seat Small spaces require smart solutions! Below, a little ingenuity transforms pullout drawers into a window seat, and the oft under-utilised wall above into a useful system of stacking shelves.

4 The indoor/outdoor seat: By designing in a super deep window sill you can create instant seating on either side of any fully-retracting window, and hey presto, a place to perch whatever the season.

5 The study seat Even without a super extended sill, you can still create a place to ponder with a little clever architectural planning as in this garden office below where super clean detailing makes the most of every inch of space.
