Gardener Tony Howard brought a touch of the exotic to the 2014 Port Eliot Festival with his Hawaiian-style border, which is designed to resemble a tropical sunset.
Planted along the edge of a walled garden – part of the Grade I-listed estate’s vast grounds – the mixed border features perennials including Echinacea, Helenium and Helianthus alongside shrubs such as Hydrangea and Elaeagnus.
Howard, a former member of the Armed Forces who retrained as a horticulturalist, now runs his own consultancy, Plot to Pot, which advises people on how to grow their own vegetables. Catch him sharing his tips from the festival’s new Flower and Fodder stage, where you can also hear from food writer Tom Parker Bowles, Masterchef winner Thomasina Miers and the green-fingered team behind Somerset-based restaurant The Ethicurean (featured in ELLE Decoration’s June 2014 issue).
