Best British Product 2014: ‘Saddle’ magazine rack by Noble & Wood
This design won votes for its simple functionality and fine materials: Italian leather pouches on a marble or walnut base. Paul Blease – who is one third of winning design trio Noble & Wood – reveals the story behind the product.
What inspired the design? We wanted to create an innovative home accessory with a simple aesthetic, combining Carrara marble and saddle leather to showcase their natural textures together. The high level of attention to detail was inspired by luxury leather goods: where possible, the material was hand-sewn or hand-finished. The handle on the marble is reminiscent of Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni’s ‘Arco’ lamp for Flos.
What was the biggest challenge? Our plan was for the base and pouches to have no fixings, so we spent time testing different materials. Thankfully, our leather was heavy enough to cope with uneven weight distribution and the design concept didn’t need to be compromised.
What does it feel like to win a British Design Award? We were honoured and excited just to be nominated, especially among such outstanding products.
What are you working on next? We’re collaborating with some exciting designers and will be launching new lighting products and some small homewares early next year.
