The cover star of ELLE Decoration’ s August 2017 ‘Trend’ issue epitomises one of this year’s key directions for modern homes: the mixed materials aesthetic. Think slabs of marble, glints of metals and exotic woods, complemented by splashes of colour, layers of fabric and mismatched prints. Anything goes…

Set in an early 19th-century building in the Brera district of Milan, Studiopepe designed this apartment to convey the sense of wonder that we often feel when first entering the private world of others – a domain revealed only by their homes. The creative duo took inspiration from artists such as Piet Mondrian, who influenced the geometric murals that decorated the walls, and created visual ‘conversations’ with the artworks, furniture, doors and windows. The look is layered, joyously colourful and daring.

In this corner of the living room, Studiopepe’s ‘Gelosia’ screen frames a marble ‘Tavolo M’ table by Angelo Mangiarotti for Agapecasa. The striped vase is by Ettore Sottsass for Bitossi. Photos: Andrea Ferrari.
