House of Hackney is as known for a deep commitment to sustainability as its nature-inspired prints that turn tradition on its head, so a unique collaboration with 1stDibs that reimagines vintage and antique pieces of furniture in the brand’s signature floral fabrics represents a perfectly logical next step.
Co-founders Freida Gormley and Javvy M Royle sourced an impressive assortment of 1970s modernist Italian pieces and had them shipped to their workshops where they set about restoring and transforming them into something completely new. Frames were assessed, springs fixed and cushions re-padded with wool stuffing – a more sustainable option – to make them soft and bouncy again.
This first drop includes ‘Amanta’ lounge chairs by B&B Italia, reworked in ‘Persephone’ woven jacquard, a 1980s Peter Bliss ‘Daffodil’ lamp, two 1970s armchairs and a ‘Grandangolo’ sofa by Titiana Ammannati & Gianpiero Vitelli, also from the 1960s, reimagined in ‘Hollyhocks Spring’ fabric.

Seeing House of Hackney’s signature blowsy florals and luxurious velvets on these strikingly contemporary shapes gives an entirely fresh perspective on both the fabrics and the furniture.
Gormley says of the pieces, ‘They are extremely well made – it was a time of such interesting furniture engineering. It’s so important that we look at a circular model and reimagine old furniture to give it a new lease of life. Having reimagined them in some of our favourite British jacquards and velvets, they will last another 30 years or longer.’
Royle adds, ‘We’re on a journey from being a B Corp sustainable business to becoming a regenerative one. We’re really passionate about making new of old and revising beautiful pieces of heirloom furniture so future generations can cherish them and, hopefully, continue to pass them on, and we’re incredibly excited to put these pieces out into the world with 1stDibs.’
Since 2000, 1stDibs has established itself as the go-to platform for collectible vintage and contemporary pieces from artisans, studios and brands ranging from Charles & Ray Eames and George Nakashima to Faye Toogood and Fornasetti.
Editorial Director, Anthony Barzilay Freund said of this new partnership ‘1stDibs has long maintained an unparalleled offering of vintage and antique treasures, even as our supply of newly minted furniture and objects has grown to meet our consumers’ increasing appetite for the latest creations. The House of Hackney collection bridges the best of both those worlds, swathing beautifully made, classic pieces (still worthy of our love and admiration) in eye-catching prints that are very much of this time.’
The collection will be on display until June 17 at House of Hackney’s Hoxton showroom and available to buy on 1stDibs alongside a curated edit of wallpaper, fabric and home accessories from House of Hackney’s mainline collection. Another drop is promised for Spring 2024. 1stdibs.com/dealers/house-of-hackney-us-inc
