Them Outdoors

After years spent designing gardens and working with interior designers and architects on residential projects, Tabi Jackson Gee had grown tired of garden furniture often being an afterthought. She had the idea for Them Outdoors in the summer of 2023 and has sourced British creatives, artists and craftspeople via magazines, social media and galleries to create design-led garden furniture, sculpture and planters. So far, nearly 20 creatives including Lewis Kemmenoe and Tom Faulkner have created exclusive pieces for the brand, which also stocks pieces that are ideal for all conditions, but have not been marketed as outdoor furniture before, like Jaclyn Pappalardo’s metal ‘A Stool’ and Olivia Gonsalves’ ‘Nexus 2’ chairs (pictured, £2,170 for two). themoutdoors.co.uk

Grythyttan Stålmöbler

Grythyttan, a town in the heart of Sweden, and the steel furniture company Grythyttan Stålmöbler are intrinsically linked. For generations, its craftspeople have been shaping steel from locally mined iron into stackable furniture for the brand. It’s all about tradition, which is why this company’s classic designs haven’t changed since 1930, when the family manufactured its first product, the ‘A2’ chair (below, from £420). According to Bo Hellberg, chief marketing officer at Grythyttan Stålmöbler, for Swedes, the ‘A2’ ‘is synonymous with long Scandinavian summer evenings and carries a lot of tradition and memories’. Meanwhile, newer collections such as ‘High Tech’ come in a range of colourways and are designed to appeal to consumers with smaller spaces, terraces and balconies. grythyttanstalmobler.com

Munder Skiles

This London showroom on Pimlico Road is a one-stop shop for all your heirloom garden-furniture needs. Founded in the early 1990s by John Danzeran, an avid collector of garden furniture, it now offers 150 products that span a variety of sizes, materials, textures and patterns. Each reinterprets historical designs found in vintage drawings and antique books, even the bones of old benches, into modern treasures, so everything has a story. For example, the ‘Almodington’ (right, from £7,626) was inspired by America’s oldest known garden bench. The team saw it in a 1930s book, hunted the original down and restored it. munder-skiles.com

Bold, playful and sitting just on the right side of unconventional, Diabla is a Spanish outdoor furniture company making a splash internationally. The quirky brand’s business model involves partnering with hot new design talent – it has already collaborated with the likes of British industrial designer Samuel Wilkinson on the dining chair ‘Tuba’ and Spanish duo Mut Design on ‘Grill’, a table and chair collection inspired by iron barbecue grills. It prides itself on making versatile products that can be used indoors and outdoors. The ‘Costuras XL Twin Base’ pouf by Teresa Sapey (above, from approx £780) is typical of the brand’s playful style, with its seams influenced by the look of a baseball. diablaoutdoor.com
