When the winners of the 98th Oscars ceremony step off stage and gather in this Greenroom designed by Rolex, perhaps they will take a short moment to think of the great watch wearers of the silver screen? From Sean Connery’s James Bond and his love of the Rolex ‘Submariner’ to the ‘Datejust’, favoured by Patrick Bateman in American Psycho and Paul Newman’s ‘Fast Eddie’ Felson in The Color of Money, the watchmaker has a deep connection with cinema.
This year, the green room will be dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the ‘Oyster’, the world’s first waterproof watch. An ‘Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona’, in 18-carat yellow gold with a vibrant green dial will be displayed in the room, with the colour palette of the soon-to-be star-filled space taken from this version. Celebrities can expect green velvet seating – with the rich colour extended across the carpet and up the fabric-clad walls – and anodized champagne gold accents on the bar and entrance. The latter is a nod to the famous statuette as well as the timepiece.
Throughout the Greenroom, portraits of the greatest stars from Oscars history will highlight the magic and artistry of cinema, creating a space that honours both a century of watchmaking and Hollywood’s most memorable moments. Leonardo Di Caprio, a Best Actor nominee for his role in One Battle After Another, became a Rolex brand ambassador last year, so is sure to feel comfortable in the space (win or lose).
Rolex has supported the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and sponsored the Oscars since 2017, hosting the event’s Greenroom and supporting the Governors Awards, which recognise lifetime achievement and humanitarian efforts in the film industry. It also assists in the preservation of film history for future generations as a Founding Supporter of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, as a partner of The Film Foundation and through its support to the National Film and Television School in the UK.
