It is fitting that the launch of Haier’s new ‘Horizon’ collection took place within the halls of the Queen’s House, a 17th-century royal residence overlooking Greenwich Park, and at the Royal Observatory, the historic home of Universal Time. The world’s leading manufacturer of refrigeration appliances* chose Greenwich as it is the home of the Prime Meridian, the very point from which global time is measured – the perfect backdrop for a project that aims to slow down the clock on food preservation. It redefines the fridge, moving away from a simple cooling machine toward a system capable of actively managing both the lifespan and quality of your food.

The ‘Horizon’ collection’s biggest innovation is not a single piece of technology, but a shift in perspective. It presents the refrigerator not as a uniform environment where everything coexists at the same temperature, but a diversified space featuring dedicated areas with specific conditions tailored to different types of food.

‘It marks a pivotal step forward in our evolution within the refrigeration sector,’ says Daniele Pugliese, Head of Cooling at Haier Europe. ‘By combining science, innovative technology and design, we have created a range that meets people’s genuine needs, helping them to preserve and organise their food more efficiently, to improve their daily lives in the kitchen. Launching this in Greenwich symbolises our commitment to redefining the relationship between time and freshness.’

At the technological core of the new series is ‘NutriBank’, a dedicated compartment for meat and fish. Operating at near-zero temperatures, it slows down spoilage without the need for freezing. By inhibiting the formation of ice crystals, which typically damage food in traditional freezing, this technology can preserve the quality of fish for up to 7 days and meat for up to 10**. The goal is to overcome a very practical everyday dilemma: having to eat food immediately or freezing it and losing out on texture, flavour and nutrients.

Surrounding the ‘NutriBank’ are other solutions aimed at a variety of food groups. The ‘Active Fresh Zone’ is the dedicated compartment for fruits and vegetables: a plant-based fibre membrane maintains humidity at 90%, promising twice the preservation time of a traditional refrigerator. ‘ABT Pro’, meanwhile, is an integrated antibacterial system that purges 99.99% of bacteria***, neutralising smells and reducing contamination risks between the food in your fridge. Completing the collection are the ‘Magic Zone’ compartments, which offer adjustable temperature for whatever you want to store (drinks, dairy products, cold cuts), as well as the ‘AI Food Care System’, which uses artificial intelligence to scan food, keep track of expiration dates and give advice on the ideal preservation conditions.

Haier sees the modern kitchen as an open, sociable space, where even the fridge can take on a completely new role. No longer just a functional unit to be boxed in and hidden away, it has become a visible presence with its own distinct design language. ‘Horizon’ embodies this vision through the design’s clean lines, premium materials and proximity lighting system that activates when you approach. Other modules also feature ‘Motion Glow’ – a glass panel door that lights up when you walk by and allows you to see inside without having to open the fridge. This reflects a fundamental shift in expectations. It’s no longer enough for the refrigerator to never switch off: we’re now also demanding it possesses an aesthetic quality that complements the space it occupies.

Not just a single flagship product, the ‘Horizon’ is part of a broad platform divided into the ‘Cube 90’ and ‘FD 90’ families, with inner volumes up to 700 litres. Specifications vary across the range: entry-level models feature the ‘Active Fresh Zone’ and ‘ABT Pro’ innovations, while top-of-the-range configurations include a water dispenser, smart screens up to 27 inches, plus ‘NutriBank’ and ‘HydroHub’ technology.

Alongside the ‘Horizon’ collection, the ‘In-Vista’ line was also unveiled in Greenwich. Designed to integrate into any environment, it aligns seamlessly with a home’s interior design without compromising on internal capacity, underscoring that this launch is also about sharing a long-term vision for the evolution of this kitchen category.

The ‘Horizon’ project addresses a genuine issue, recognising that while the fridge is the only constantly running appliance and the quietest presence in our homes, it has been viewed as a mere container for decades. With this collection, Haier seeks to redefine its role, transforming it to an object that manages the lifespan of food, offers intelligent internal spaces, and matches the identity of our modern kitchens.
