Time to hang up your coat with our edit of the best coatstands

You don’t need a reception room to embrace autumn’s must-have accessory – but there are some new rules you should know before hanging up your coat

Coat stands have evolved from the space-stealing furnishing you only used at your grandma’s house to sculptural, playful pieces that you won’t want to hide beneath a pile of jackets. Once only known for their practicality, these contemporary stands are also great at giving main-character energy – just don’t think of them as something to bury under a wealth of coats. Instead, use them as artistic centrepieces in and of themselves.

After deciding on a shape (the more fun the better, in our opinion – cactus? monkey?), think about where they might work best. Plot twist: the hallway isn’t always the safest bet. If you’ve got a narrow hall, why not think about having one near your back door, or even in the bedroom as a sleek place to hang tomorrow’s outfit choice? Remember, the best coat stands are the ones that look good, even with nothing on.
