Ukrainian designer Anastasiya Dudik is an expert at challenging traditional architecture. Evidence of this is her Hata Dome house, a five-metre-high monolithic concrete dome located in the middle of the California desert, specifically in the town of Pioneertown. This brutalist-style construction seems to have come from a primitive future in which groundbreaking design is not at odds with comfort.
The sculptural sanctuary features five-metre-high ceilings that curve into a cathedral shape and a spacious, light-filled interior. Despite the extreme desert temperatures, the house maintains a constant and comfortable interior climate thanks to its thick concrete walls wrapped in high-performance foam insulation, as the concrete gradually absorbs and releases heat, reducing the dependence on heating and cooling.
Inside, everything is in keeping with the futuristic exterior: custom furniture formed from rock and stainless steel, smooth lunar-hued plaster walls, circular windows… Moreover, the acoustics are filled with soft echoes and enhance the dome’s sense of stillness and scale. Through panoramic sliding doors, a circular saltwater pool and spa open onto sweeping views of the extraordinary landscape.
