In compact houses every last centimetre of space needs to be utilised. Functionality and versatility are key. One gem that gets all the essentials of a tiny home correct is Minimalhaus Uckermark, this house designed by Reuter Schoger architecture studio. Its most distinctive feature is that its main façades are made entirely of glass.

The house is located in the village of Herzfelde, near Berlin, and is a holiday rental belonging to Urlaubsarchitektur – a platform connecting owners of exceptional holiday homes with travellers who love the countryside and architecture. Measuring 60 square metres, the house can accommodate up to six people and has two bedrooms, a bathroom and an open-plan kitchen and living area. Compact yet comfortable, it’s filled with light, air and views of nature.

To maintain the versatility and adaptability required by tiny houses, all interior spaces are reduced to a clean and basic design. Unity was sought in the finishes, with acacia wood flooring in a rich tone and neutral paints on the walls – white in the common areas, grey in the bathroom, and a clay finish in the bedrooms, to maximise natural light.

A concise selection of furniture was chosen, featuring minimalist, Nordic-inspired designs. Lightweight pieces are crafted from wood or painted white, while custom-designed built-in modules pieces can be expanded, reduced or unfolded to magically create additional tables and worksurfaces. Even the sofa conceals part of its surface within the wall, transforming into a bed when pulled out.

Accessories and decorative items are hidden in drawers and storage areas so as not to distract from the landscape. Likewise, throughout the house, you will see few handles, knobs or elements that disrupt the aesthetic continuity of the dwelling. Ornamentation is located outside the windows.

Besides its glass façade, another of the most extraordinary aspects of this tiny country house’s architectural design is its efficient use of space, especially in the walls, where drawers, closets and hidden storage spaces have been cleverly integrated. The house is structured on two levels , with the living room having a higher ceiling; this difference in height, or step, leading to the bedrooms and bathrooms proved to be the perfect space for designing a series of closets at floor level.

The large glass enclosures, along with the fireplace, are responsible for heating the main room. In the summer months, these façades feature motorised white blinds that allow light in while mitigating the heat. These designs are complemented by long, floor-to-ceiling curtains that add a subtle sense of movement to the interior design.

The porch, although narrow, covers a large part of the house’s perimeter. In fact, this space runs along three of the module’s four sides and is protected by the enormous roof, making it a wonderful place to sit and contemplate the landscape on rainy days. When the glass doors are opened, the porch blends seamlessly into the living room, creating a connection between it and the landscape.

Just like the interior, this space features extra-long wooden slat flooring reminiscent of a ship’s deck. In a grayish tone, this surface accommodates very few design pieces, such as some seating for afternoons of reading or contemplation, and an outdoor dining area in one of the corners most sheltered from the wind. Ultimately, the aesthetic reflects the minimalist style of the entire space. This is an unforgettable retreat for those who appreciate contemporary design that blends seamlessly with nature. reuterschoger.de
