For a rich, warming bedroom scheme look no further than a palette inspired by fruits of the forest – think russet red, deep pinks and dramatic purple. These archival projects demonstrate how this palette can be combined with decorating techniques like colour drenching to create a cocooning bedroom designed for a very stylish season of hibernation.

A cleverly crafted headboard coated with waxed concrete occupies the entire width of this Parisian bedroom, designed by Marie Deroudilhe. The ‘Mohair’ throw from Brun de Vian-Tiran and velvet cushions from Les Composantes bring berry tones to the bed, while the diptych Facade D by Przemek Pyszczek adds graphic drama above.

A restored 1960s Italian chest of drawers from Castorina and Co painted in a glorious plummy purple takes centre stage in this Melbourne bedroom. Designer Jase Sullivan continued the berry theme with ‘Fortino’ wallpaper by Barbara Frua for Pictalab Milano, its cranberry-coloured motif echoed in a watercolour by Margaret Ackland, which is flanked by the ‘Parasol’ table lamp by Palefire Studio x 8 Holland Street and a Murano glass bowl.

Panther, an artwork by Anna Glover, sets the mood and palette of this bedroom in a Hertfordshire home. Designer Tiffany Duggan made the spacious room instantly cocoon-like by colour drenching it in a warming rust red. She designed both the expansive headboard, upholstered in ‘Perses’ by Marvic Textiles, and the bespoke armchair in the corner which is covered in Tibor’s ‘Eroica’ fabric, while The Rug Company’s ‘Coco’ design amps up the cosy factor.

A London home that glows with jewel colours

Emily Johnson, founder of ceramics brand 1882 Ltd, threw herself wholeheartedly into colour when it came to decorating her London home. ‘I knew painting only the walls and leaving the ceilings white just wasn’t going to work here, so in each room I painted them one colour and then contrasted the woodwork and cornicing with another,’ she says. Peacock green, cobalt, carnation pink and pops of orange mingle throughout the four-bedroom property, while this cosy guest bedroom is cloaked in Designers Guild’s ‘Melanzane No 149’.

The showroom that’s an homage to the bed

The interiors of The House, a gallery in east London, change seasonally and this incarnation was inspired by Afra and Tobia Scarpa’s ‘Vanessa’ bed. The entire space is painted in oxblood, a decision that ‘doesn’t make the space feel smaller as you’d imagine it might,’ notes owner Laura Fulmine. ‘In fact I think it does the opposite – painting the ceiling the same colour as the walls makes it seem as though they have no cut-off point.’ Above that iconic bed is dressed with a decadent, bespoke silk bedspread by East London Cloth. Alexandria Coe’s ‘Olympia’ silk wallhanging is situated above, its gold tones picked up in the ‘Ottone’ rug from the ‘Milano Collection’ by Sinclair Till and The House.

Riffs on raspberry define this stylish bedroom designed by Marion Stora. The deep magenta wall and vibrant ombre sheer curtain (made from Rosemary Hallgarten’s ‘Alpaca’ fabric) contrast pleasingly with the earthiness of the cane wood and olive leather headboard, a custom piece by the designer, while the aged-brass and suede lights are from New York-based brand Apparatus.

Farrow & Ball’s ‘Bible Black’ paint sets the moody tone of this bedroom in interior designer Nadia Olive Schnack’s Copenhagen home. The gothic purple makes a dramatic backdrop to a painting Nadia inherited from her mother-in-law, while the Tapet-Café bedspread brings a lightness of touch to the dramatic scheme.

Interior designer Linda Boronkay knows the power of colour when it comes to creating a mood. When designing this show apartment in London’s iconic Whiteley development she let the soft furnishings do the heavy lifting against a neutral wall colour. A Ben Whistler headboard and bespoke chaise by Boronkay Studio are paired with burgundy bedding, while a tapestry that Linda commissioned from Nest Design ties the scheme together.

‘Pontefract’ by Paint & Paper Library gives this room a sumptuous feeling while Pierre Frey’s bubblegum pink ‘Teddy’ mohair on the headboard adds a playful feel. The berry-toned scheme continues with the curtains, made from ‘Abstract 1928’ fabric by Zoffany the ditzy floral bedding from Coco & Wolf – cube-shaped bedside table by Sabine Marcelis sits below an Atelier Areti wall light.

The jewel-toned home in Harlem

‘We wanted to create a jewel box-like interior full of wonders, sensuality and visual excitement,’ says designer Jarvis Wong of this maximalist dream home in Harlem. An homage to the neighbourhood’s modern-day vibrancy and gilded age past, the apartment is a heady mix of rich colours, provocative artwork and statement furniture – the bedroom is colour-drenched in a rich plum and features a bespoke headboard covered in Jim Thompson’s ‘Calypso’ fabric, flanked by dramatic wooden posts and an emerald green bench at the foot of the bed.
