There’s a thriving cultural and international arts scene in Miami all year round – just look to our design guide to Miami for where to stay and what to see – but, for one week every year, the city becomes the focus of the world art scene. This week, for Miami Art Week, which includes Design Miami and Art Basel Miami Beach, there is plenty of inspiration to be found for those who stray beyond the beaches and bars. Here are our five key highlights to help you keep your finger on the pulse.
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Pulse Topology with BMW i at Superblue
Composed of 3,000 lightbulbs suspended at different heights, Pulse Topology by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer is the latest in an ongoing series of 'Pulse Artworks' by the Mexican Canadian artist that captures the heartbeats of interactive participants. The immersive artwork pulses and waves, creating a flickering, memento mori landscape. 17th November 2022 – August 2023, 101 NW 23 Street, Miami.
Come Stai? A chair by Gaetano Pesce with Matthieu Blazy for Bottega Veneta
Bottega Veneta will presents an installation by Italian architect and designer Gaetano Pesce made up of 400 cotton canvas, resin-dipped chairs in a spectrum of colours, originally commissioned by Creative Director, Matthieu Blazy for the brands Summer 2022 show at Milan Fashion Week. A selection of chairs will be available for purchase. 30th November to 4th December, 153 NE 40th Street, Miami.

SEX by Madonna, The Re-Edition Imagined by Anthony Vaccarello
This exhibition, curated by Madonna and Saint Laurent’s Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello celebrates the re-edition of Madonna’s groundbreaking book SEX with Steven Meisel’s images revived as an exhibition temporarily on display at a beachfront box built especially for the occasion. The show coincides with the re-release of the book, and a limited number of signed copies will be sold, with proceeds going to Madonna’s Raising Malawi fund. 29th November 2022 to 4th December 2022, Beach Front at 17th Street, Miami Beach. FENDI presents Triclinium by Lukas Gschwandtner
For this year’s show, FENDI invited Vienna-based artist Lukas Gschwandtner to create a new body of work result of which is Triclinium, a series of wearable canvas sculptures that reference his fascination with imagery of women on chaise longues. A continuation of his Pillow Portraitsseries, the works draw inspiration from Fendi’s historical use of leather work and calico. ‘29th November – 4th December, Miami Beach Convention Centre 1901 Convention Centre Dr, Miami Beach.
Design Miami Talks Program
The 2022 talks program is packed with diverse discussions and insights, a selection of which will available online. Highlights include musician and tech CEO Erykah Badu and ceramicist, activist and poet Roberto Lugo discussing their artistic practices, and artist and designer A$AP Rocky in conversation with GUFRAM’s Global Creative Orchestrator, Charley Vezza on contemporary aesthetics, lateral thinking and their multidisciplinary approach to design.
Citizen M, Miami
Miami’s Brickell neighbourhood is booming and it’s in this buzzy location you’ll find the city’s first outpost of the Dutch design hotel citizenM. As with its sister properties, the space is packed with art and contemporary design with commissioned works by Theresa Chromati and Lakwena Maciver as well as a colourful façade featuring a totem by Miami-based artist Jen Stark. Ten local artists selected via an open call have also created dynamic, colourful pieces that can be found throughout the rooms. Going forward, citizenM World Center, a larger property located directly opposite Biscayne Bay is due to open in January 2023.
