Amanda Sharp, co-founder of the global Frieze Art Fair – the London iteration of which is taking place now – has described art as a vital space for freedom of expression, allowing for perspectives that challenge norms and stimulate imagination, preventing the world from becoming dull and lacking in human insight.
I couldn’t agree more and, when it comes to the way we use art in our homes, this rejection of ‘the dull’ is even more essential. Given this issue coincides with Frieze London and a number of other important fairs, we wanted this month’s Focus section to explore these themes, looking at art’s role in our daily lives.
At the heart of our coverage are three different homes, where various genres of art have been used to powerful effect. Showcasing Black, LGBTQIA+ artists and the accessibility of affordable prints, these case studies also emphasise the inherently political nature of creative expression as an outlet for personal views, challenging established narratives and promoting different ways of seeing the world. I’m so proud of my team for uncovering these inspirational individuals and showing what can be achieved with vision and commitment.
What's everyone reading?
It’s worth noting that an appreciation of art is not limited to what adorns your walls. We talk to longtime contributor Laura Fulmine about how to layer different media, sitting everything from paintings and sculpture to textiles and other objets alongside each other in stylish and stunning ways. There’s an in-depth examination of the status of the collectible-design market, too, which seems more potent than ever with true creativity coming to the fore. Speaking of which, I’m thrilled to also include a number of British interior designers and creatives whose debut furniture collections stand as art pieces in their own right.
Of course, this time of the year isn’t just about the art world’s heady whirl of events; it’s also a time when we turn our attention from the outdoors in, leaning into the first temperature drops of autumn and anticipating cosying up during the half-hibernation of the months ahead.
It’s fitting then that we’re also honing in on all things related to the bedroom, from the latest buys to guarantee a satisfying slumber to the rising trend for XL beds – even Emperor and Super King shrink into insignificance next to these behemoths. So, whether you’re searching for a good night’s sleep or just a new way to look at the world, ELLE Decoration has got you covered. Rest and enjoy.
