First designed in 1956, the original ‘Pira’ shelving unit was, with its clean lines and light frame, amid-century masterpiece. It went on to become an iconic and much-loved design, present in the home of almost every swinging 1960s tastemaker– including Mick Jagger, who proudly displayed it in his London flat.

For 2023, String has created ‘Pira G2’, a contemporary update that we predict will be just as popular. Reworked in modern materials, this modular piece is staggeringly versatile, featuring a steel frame that can be freestanding or wall-mounted, and finished with cabinets in walnut or oak.

‘It has a unique contemporary design and architectural presence, and casually commands a space, especially as a room divider,’says Bo Hellberg, chief marketing officer at String.

Fans of mid-century design will surely be the first in line to snap up this new iteration – just don’t call it a throwback, says co-designer Björn Dahlström.

‘The ambition was never to design a retro-style piece of furniture, but rather to embrace the core idea behind the original “Pira”and create a taller, wider version,’ he says. A tried-and-tested idea, brought bang up to date: the ‘Pira G2’ is a future classic in the making. £2,995, stringfurniture.com
