Like a well-tailored dress or suit, you can tell when something has been created bespoke – it just fits better. That same theory applies to your home. These master craftspeople have the skills to help you make the most of your space and ensure it looks elegant. No unsightly gaps, no failed flat-pack shame, just beautiful joinery that enhances an interior. Whether you are looking for fitted wardrobes, a media unit you can be proud of or, must-have of the moment, an amazing breakfast nook, these are the people to have on your radar.

Benchmark

living room with modern decor featuring shelves and a fireplace
Kensington Laverne

Perhaps better known for its own furniture, created in collaboration with the likes of Foster + Partners and David Rockwell, this studio founded by Sean Sutcliffe and the late Terence Conran has undeniable design credentials. As well as working on large bespoke projects for commercial venues, it does still accept commissions for residential work, and you don’t have to be an architect or designer to apply – although many of its clients are (shelving created for a London townhouse by interior-design studio Nenmar, pictured). Working from Conran’s country estate in Berkshire, as well as a space in Dorset, its skilled craftspeople have a style that combines Danish sensibilities with British woodworking traditions. Benjamin’s Workshop

mixed timber bespoke wardrobe
David Cleveland

Compared with some on this list, this is a young company – Simon Benjamin Pearce founded it in 2021. However, its reputation has grown quickly, thanks to the innovative approach of the craftspeople in its Bethnal Green workshop. Recent projects include wardrobe doors made of patchworked sections of colourful stained oak and cork (above) for a Clerkenwell penthouse and a bar cabinet clad in artistic shapes cut from pieces of solid walnut by artisan maker John Alfredo Harris. Commissions from £5,000; benjworkshop.com

Byron Pritchard

interior hallway featuring curved wooden cabinetry and dark green carpet
TWBriggs

This designer and maker revels in subverting conventions, with his one-off furniture creation and fitted storage (like the wardrobes for this dressing room, above), which he has created for offices and homes across London. He believes in maintaining a sense of honesty in the way he uses wood, with simplicity being as important as originality. Many of his creative designs feature in his own home, which he shares with his partner, interior designer Hollie Bowden. Commissions from £16,000; byronpritchard.co.uk

Chamber Furniture

a stylish home bar setup with glassware and decor
Chamber Furniture

Established in 1994, this Kent-based brand is known for its kitchens, but its commissions touch every room in the home. Its wine rooms (Chamber collaborates with Wine By Design) and statement bars are well worth attention, with pieces such as the Rosso Levanto marble topped cabinet in this Surrey games room by SGS Design (above) showing the potential of its approach. One designer is assigned to your project from initial sketches through to installation. Commission prices on application; chamberfurniture.co.uk

EastJR

modern dining area with a wooden wall and artwork
EastJR

Creative and experimental in spirit, this east-London joinery firm has outfitted spaces for brands including Aesop and some of the city’s trendiest teahouses and coffee shops. Its residential work (such as the London home of actress Stacy Martin, above) is just as innovative. Its method is collaborative and community-focused: the team takes a streamlined approach to the design process, with a focus on waste limitation. For EastJR, good design is a conversation, and it’s all about ‘asking the right questions’. Commissions from £10,000; eastjr.co.uk

What's everyone reading?

Goldfinch

a organized closet space with clothing and office elements
Goldfinch

This Bermondsey-based company produces ethically made fitted and freestanding furniture, like this unit in the head office of Desmond & Dempsey (above). But what does it mean to be ethical? For Goldfinch, it translates to caring for the community (it works with the local youth-employment charity London Reclaimed) and the planet (timber comes from London-grown trees via Fallen & Felled or from woodlands where a replanting scheme is in place). Commissions from £3,000; goldfinchfurniture.co.uk

Hill + Hurl

storage unit with a plant and decorative objects
Hill & Hurl

Founders Calum Hill and James Hurley made a name for their brand by crafting perfectly fitted wardrobes and cabinets for clients across London from their Clapton-based workshop. Now, they have added kitchens to their repertoire, with Valchromat, their material of choice (used in a recent London project, above), informing how they think about all of their designs going forwards. Made from waste wood and without the use of harmful solvents, it’s the key to their environmentally friendly solutions. Commissions from £1,500; hillhurl.com

Hux London

hux london under stairs joinery
Guifre de Peray

Having started life as the in-house joinery division of interior-design studio Zulufish before Felix Milns launched it as an independent brand back in 2017, Hux London can offer opinions on all elements, from build to materials and lighting. Out of their workshop near High Wycombe, the team produces everything from bespoke tables to shelving and bars (such as this under-stairs solution, above). Projects also recieve a six months post completion aftercare check. Commissions from £15,000; hux-london.co.uk

Inglis Hall

sleek wooden pantry with open drawers and a door leading to another room
Inglis Hall

Describing themselves as ‘kitchen makers through and through’, the team at this workshop in Lewes may forgive people for not realising that they take on commissions outside the heart of the home. Founded by Toby Hall, the brand is, however, proud to apply its traditional skills to bespoke storage (like this pantry, above). It purposefully limits the number of projects that are taken on to ensure that each one can be approached with the focus and passion it deserves. Commissions from £45,000; inglishall.com

Lozi Designs

modern shelving unit with various decorative items and storage boxes
Andras Bartok

Two concepts underpin founder Soroush Pourhashemi’s work: personalisation and sustainability. The furniture, lighting and accessories created in his Hackney workshop using plywood can all be customised, but the Lozi team also offers one-of-a-kind designs, even entire homes – House of Lozi will make all the multifunctional joinery for a maximised living space, with projects starting at £25,000 for a studio flat (like the one pictured above and top). Commissions from £1,000 for furniture; lozidesigns.com

Makers

makers bespoke sideboard
Mary Wadsworth

Furniture designer Justin Brown founded this brand, which has a showroom in Richmond and a nearby south-London workshop, in 2018, with a desire to create beautiful pieces that are ‘a joy to use’. Although, like many joinery companies, Makers is better known for its made-to-measure kitchens, it also makes wardrobes, sideboards (such as the one in its Ondara project, above), temperature-controlled wine rooms and even bespoke boot rooms. Commissions from £2,000; makersfurniture.co.uk

Puck

living room with modern furnishings and artwork
Adam Scott

This north-London studio wants to make sure every project is exciting rather than daunting; it also takes care to choose materials that are contemporary and will look good for many years to come. All of the wood used is FSC-certified, and for every £250 spent on a project, Puck will plant a tree together with its partner Mossy Earth. Recent builds include a media unit (pictured above) for a home in Dalston. Uniqueness and fun are recurring themes in this brand’s work. Commissions from £5,000; puck.london

Roundhouse Design

Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, Roundhouse was founded by architects Craig Matson and Victoria Marriott. Having started out in Camden, the company now has seven showrooms and a large workshop in Malvern. Its style has remained unchanged as it has grown in scale, with an understated aesthetic the key. Its kitchens are renowned, but its integrated cabinetry (including this games-room bar, above) benefits from the same attention to detail. Commissions from £10,000; roundhousedesign.com
