Editor’s letter
2020 and its long, drawn-out days of lockdown have led to a lot of reflection, both on a personal and a global level. It’s given us all time to think long and hard about what’s important, what really matters and what doesn’t.
On consideration, I’m amazed by the pointless endeavours and unnecessary commitments that used to fill my time, and am determined to recalibrate my approach to how I do things going forward.
I’ve also been musing on the interiors industry as a whole, looking at what we feature on these pages and how we do what we do. I kept thinking of the phrase ‘style over substance’ – a criticism that’s often levelled at creative work which doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. And so I decided to reframe everything after the mantra ‘style and substance’, as surely this can be the only justification for inclusion in the new world order. This is no time for frippery and nonsense.
Some will argue that this assertion sits oddly in an issue where we are focusing on the ongoing interaction between the worlds of fashion and interiors, but I would disagree. Home is a tangible and genuine expression of your personal style, so it makes sense that the biggest names in luxury fashion are key to shaping its future.
After all, it’s not just about looking good, this is also a story of craftsmanship, dedication to the finer details and a deep respect for creativity and innovation. That’s why, in this issue, we also announce the winners of the 2020 ELLE Decoration International Design Awards, celebrating the best of global ingenuity and vision. Style and substance in perfect harmony.
