The term ‘art collector’ carries several weighty connotations, many of which can feel exclusionary, especially for those with less experience in the art world. However, Ikea is attempting to change all that with its new limited-edition ‘Konstrunda’ collection, which is named after the Swedish word for ‘art tour’.

Created by seven international talents from different industries and backgrounds, the pieces in the range bridge the art and design worlds and serve both functional and decorative purposes. The idea is that burgeoning buyers can access the collectible design market.

‘Art should be available for all to enjoy, not a luxury reserved for galleries,’ says Karin Gustavsson, creative leader for ‘Konstrunda’. ‘At Ikea, we don’t claim to define or explain art. Instead, our role is to create space for it,’ she continues. ‘Through “Konstrunda”, we offer a platform for artists to create and an opportunity for people to collect art that is affordable and reflects who they are in the home.’

There are 22 pieces in the series, spanning furniture, homeware and accessories and artworks, all of which come with an affordable price tag of under £200. Each contributor was given free rein to create personal pieces that reflect their individual style.

Elsewhere, Emanuele Stamuli produced a family of monochrome objects with minimalist geometric patterns, while Lisa Reiser has created a bowl-shaped decoration in mouth-blown and polished glass. ‘With “Konstrunda”, we wanted to create a collection that encourages people to express themselves and surround themselves with objects they love,’ adds Gustavsson.

The limited-edition ‘Konstrunda’ collection will be available globally both online and in stores from September 1. ikea.com
