Shoreditch hub Istituto Marangoni, alongside sister institutions in Milan, Shanghai and Mumbai, has long offered the gold standard in fashion education to the next generation of creatives. Since 2018 it’s expanded this creative roster, adding courses in Interior Design, Product Design, Jewellery Design and Visual Design.

To celebrate, ELLE Decoration Editor-in-Chief Ben Spriggs hosted a lively discussion with ELLE Decoration International Design Award winners Bethan Laura Wood and Lee Broom, as well as exciting young furniture designer Mac Collins.

‘The creative industries are going through a turbulent time, but design is both a reaction to change, and drives change,’ opens our very own Ben Spriggs. ‘It’s always helped to drive things forward.’

So begins a debate on the way good design can steer us towards a more socially and environmentally responsible world. The designers dive into vital topics such as how homes might serve our changing needs, the way the coronavirus pandemic has altered our use of public spaces, such as restaurants, and how we might arm the next wave of design talent with the tools to shape the future.

‘Design covers such a broad myriad of different things. It’s not just furniture, fashion, architecture, but urban planning, social care… and every single manmade object that you’ve ever touched has been designed by somebody. It subconsciously affects everything we do as an individual,’ says Lee Broom.

‘Design is everywhere – it’s so connected to everyday life,’ agrees Bethan Laura Wood. ‘A well-designed teacup handle can affect the way we drink.’

‘It’s a really important opportunity to steer social discourse,’ says Mac Collins. ‘Honest, but optimistic conversations need to be had in all areas of society.’
